We spent the 2nd weekend of August in Steamboat Springs to celebrate my birthday. We love Steamboat in the Winter. It's a bit further of a drive from Denver than Summit County or Vail but the extra miles and trip over Rabbit Ears Pass are well worth the time it takes to get there. The skiing is not crowded, the food is not overpriced (by ski resort standards, of course) and the snow is DIVINE. Steamboat is a quaint little town that hasn't been jazzed up by the glitz and the glamour just yet. Although the resort has recently changed hands several times and is in the process of some development, its historic downtown still hold wonderful charm and small town appeal.
We had never been to Steamboat in the summer despite our numerous trips in the Winter. We decided that a weekend trip to Steamboat was something to put on the calendar for the summer of 2009. We picked a weekend in August and made our plans.

We had a great time enjoying all that summertime in the mountains has to offer. We went hiking with Roxy at Fish Creek Falls. We didn't make it the two miles to the Upper Falls due to the steep and rocky nature of the trail but maybe next time we go we will start a little earlier in the day. We explored new and interesting places to eat. Freshies is a new find and delicious. We also tried the Cottonwood Grill which has a great patio that backs up to the Yampa river. We even attended the Steamboat Rodeo. I have not been to a rodeo in years; truthfully I don't actually remember the last rodeo I went to but my Mom assures me we went to the Pikes Peak Rodeo a few times as children. It was truly a fun and different experience. I even got a Root Beer Float and it was tasty!
We were also able to have dinner with one of Brian's old neighbors from La Canada, CA and her husband. They built a beautiful house on 120 acres of amazing land and we were in awe. It was great to enjoy the mountain air and have a nice dinner with Cindy and Larry. We also met up with our friends from Denver, Lynda and Greg, and their new baby daughter, Caroline, who were in Steamboat for a week long family vacation.
It was a nice mix of friends and time to ourselves. Roxy thoroughly enjoyed herself hiking and being in the cool mountain air. We can't wait to get back before the snow begins!
